This delightful poster was created by Guus Melai in the mid 1950s for Fosra Failre, the National Tourist Publicity Organisation of Ireland. A man in a rustic cabled Aran fisherman’s sweater and woolen cap weaves at the seaside while two others carry a wooden boat across a rocky beach. Guus Melai along with his countrymen and fellow graphic artists Piet Sluis, Gerrit van Geldren, Jan de Fouw, Bert van Embden and Gerrit van Geldren were recruited by Aer Lingus and the National Tourist Publicity Organisation in the 1950s and produced a number of wonderful Irish travel posters including this one. The lower part of the poster is overprinted with advertising for the An Tostal Springtime Festival of Irish culture which was held for three weeks in May of 1955. The lower margin indicates “Printed in the Republic of Ireland by Browne & Nolan ltd. Dublin F.F. 43/53-15.”
