    ARSHILE GORKY ( 1904 - 1948 ) IS AN ARMENIAN AMERICAN PAINTER WHO HELD A SEMINAL INFLUENCE ON ABSTRACT EXPRESSIONISM. ALONG WITH MARK ROTHKO, JACKSON POLLOCK, AND WILLEM DE KOONING, GORKY IS HAILED AS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT AMERICAN ARTISTS OF THE TWENTIETH CENTURY. DURING THE 1930'S HE ABSORBED AND RE DEFINED EUROPEAN AVANTE GARDE SENSIBILITIES. HIS WORKS WERE OFTEN SPECULATED TO HAVE BEEN INFORMED BY THE SUFFERING AND LOSS EXPERIENCED IN THE ARMENIAN GENOCIDE. ART WORKS BY GORKY ARE HELD IN THE COLLECTIONS OF MANY OF THE WORLD'S MOST PRESTIGIOUS MUSEUMS.
    HANS GUSTAV BURKHARDT ( 1904 - 1994 ) WAS A SWISS BORN AMERICAN ABSTRACT EXPRESSIONIST ARTIST. BURKHARDT'S PAINTINGS OF THE 1930'S ARE PART OF THE GENESIS OF AMERICAN ABSTRACT EXPRESSIONIST IN 1937 HE MOVED TO LOS ANGELES AND REPRESENTED THE MOST SIGNIFICANT BRIDGE BETWEEN NEW YORK AND LOS ANGELES IN THE MOVEMENT. HIS EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATIVE APPROACH PARALLELED, AND IN MANY WAYS WAYS ANTICIPATED, THE DEVELOPMENT OF MODERN AND CONTEMPORARY ART IN NEW YORK AND EUROPE.
