Shadowbox framed black gold antique fan animal hide

This was purchased at an estate auction in Santa Cruz, CA so we don't know its history.  Obviously, this was cherished by someone.  It is a black fan with gold pant that has been shadow box framed.  You can see the thread that held one section to the next and being tied to the frame of the fan.  Not sure what the frame of the fan is made out of -- we did not want to unseal the frame back.  We believe it is some sort of animal hide or a very thick paper.  There is a little piece floating in at the bottom that was part of the bottom loop.  The fan measures approx. 12.75 inches across.  The frame, with glass, measures 18 x 12.5 inches.
